First Friday Art Walk – May 2016
Stop by NexLynx Gallery of Arts, Friday May 6th from 5pm to 8pm, to view the beautiful drawings and paintings that were inspired by geodes, gemstones, and crystals during our First Friday Art Walk.
NexLynx is Downtown Topeka’s premier gallery stop on the First Friday Art Walk since November 2010 displaying hundreds of original photographs, paintings, carvings and sculptures from dozens of local and regional artists.
At a young age, Lois VanLiew was fascinated with geodes, gemstones and crystals, spending hours studying the shapes and colors of her Grandfather’s collection. A friend encouraged her to paint using them as inspiration. Lois finds the beauty that emerges from these stones to be a compelling exploration.
Graduating from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Art Education degree, Lois has worked in a variety of mediums throughout her career. She has studied printmaking and handmade paper at Ox Bow in Saugatuck, MI for several summers, paints in acrylic, oil, and explores watercolor and using charcoal and pastels in drawing the human figure.
Lois is a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and received a 2nd Place, Cash Award in 2012 for a Prismacolor drawing in their Midwest Color 2012 juried exhibit. Her work has found homes in various international places including Italy and India. She is represented in many private, public and museum collections and continues studio work in the growing NOTO Arts District. You can view more of Lois VanLiew’s work at loisvanliew.com.
