First Friday Art Walk – February 2019
Doug’s painting adventure began with a How-to-Draw book using pen and pencil sketches on paper. After finishing his internship and 4 years of medical school, when he had scant time for painting, Doug received the gift of a pastel set and colored paper and has been creating ever since.
He has used many mediums; pastel, watercolor, acrylic, gauche and egg tempura, but his recent works are primarily in oil. He applies his selected medium with various instruments: pencil, pen, brush, palette knife and even a toothbrush. His favorite is using squirt bottles.
Doug prefers painting in series. His series, “The Water’s Edge”, was painted mostly in 2016 using palette knives to apply paint to freshly treated wood or composite surfaces. Viewing from different perspectives; upstream, downstream or just watching the river flow by, using palette knifes can produce rhythm and sparkle that create a sense of fresh moving water. The thick strokes of color bring a powerful brightness to his paintings. You can view more of his work at dougfryeart.com.
