First Friday Art Walk – February 2016
Stop by NexLynx Gallery of Arts, Friday February 5th from 5pm to 8pm, to view the unique cutout paintings of talented artist, Doug Frye, during our First Friday Art Walk.
NexLynx is Downtown Topeka’s premier gallery stop on the First Friday Art Walk since November 2010 displaying hundreds of original photographs, paintings, carvings and sculptures from dozens of local and regional artists.
Doug envisions hard edged reality through his paintings on raw surfaces by using the underlying surface color, which can be seen through the medium, creating the tone and mood of the painting.
He began drawing as a child and developed his own style of art with little formal training. After finishing his medical internship in 1983, he began painting seriously, first with pastels and then with watercolor. After moving to Arizona in 1986, he experimented with acrylic and using composite or plywood boards as his surface.
When he arrived in Topeka in 1989, he found access to a wood shop and began experimenting with many different cutout paintings. Since 2012, he has begun to use oils in many of his works. You can view more of his work at dougfryeart.com.
