First Friday Art Walk – September 2016
Discover Art Downtown at NexLynx Gallery of Arts, Friday September 2nd from 5pm to 8pm, to view the unique Oxidized Art by Charles Ray during our First Friday Art Walk.
NexLynx is Downtown Topeka’s premier gallery stop on the First Friday Art Walk since November 2010 displaying hundreds of original photographs, paintings, carvings and sculptures from dozens of local and regional artists.
After a lot of moving around the South in his early years, Charles Ray chose Lawrence, KS as his home-base in 1994. He then studied printmaking and sculpture at the University of Kansas, School of Fine Arts, graduating in 2003.
Stepping outside the common practices used in making art, Charles put his fondness for printmaking and rusted sculptures together. The results are fantastic! Using oxidation, he produces some very contemplative images that contrast organic with geometric. These metaphoric images, which are mostly abstract, create a path for mental exploration. As the experience of life is specific to the individual, the viewer is invited to interpret their own experience of the oxidized art.
