First Friday Art Walk – February 2024
A retired professor, filmmaker and photographer, Chuck has taught a range of courses in media, media arts, television, photography and film at the graduate and undergraduate levels. His films have been seen on PBS, distributed internationally, and screened at film festivals.
While growing up in Texas, Chuck enjoyed spending his days outdoors exploring and traveling with family. He especially enjoyed summer trips to the mountains or other scenic destinations. While on these trips he watched his dad take landscape photos and shoot 8mm film to document the trips. When he was ten, he was given his first camera, a point-and-shoot Kodak. Over the years, he developed a serious passion for photography with eventual undergraduate studies in photojournalism, commercial photography, and filmmaking. During these years his black and white photography was exhibited at local art fairs along with early commercial projects in and around Dallas. While in graduate school, one of his films won praise in film competitions and another film was syndicated to commercial TV stations around the country.
Chuck seeks to find interesting locations to photograph, from abstract space to serene beauty found in nature. His images may capture reflections in a simple drop of water or explore the remoteness of prairies or mountains. He often likes to create cinematic images with his photography that are both interpretive and dramatic. Creating unusual ways of seeing a subject is of primary interest, and by including that detail in his work he hopes to inspire others to discover more about what is around them and to think more about what they see.
