First Friday Art Walk – May 2021
Discover Art Downtown at our Artist Reception at NexLynx Gallery of Arts, Friday May 7th from 5pm to 8pm. View the intricate mandala paintings by Amy Allen, during our First Friday Art Walk.
Amy has enjoyed creating art as far back as she can remember, taking several art classes in school and continuing occasionally throughout her adult life. From crafting, drawing, and painting, she used art as a form of self-expression. Amy’s favorite mediums are acrylic, watercolor, and pencil, currently working primarily in acrylics.
After a 16-year career as a clinical psychologist to homeschooling her children, Amy felt the change brought significant amounts of anxiety despite her excitement. This is where she discovered mandalas and the repetitive dot art technique to be very calming. Inspired by the artwork of Elspeth McLean, who is internationally known for her dot mandala artwork on stones, Amy knew she wanted to learn this style. She picked up the book Mandala Stones by Natasha Alexander, in which she teaches in detail the techniques of dot painting. Amy has been dot painting mandalas in various forms and scenes since. The name Mandalamy Arts comes from a mash-up of her name and her new favorite art form.
Her art has been published in the datebook We’Moon: Gaia Rhythms for Womyn for the past 2 years. As well as her art piece, “Solar Wind”, was featured three times on CBS Sunday Morning in 2020, and once in 2021.
