First Friday Art Walk – September 2020

Kathy started creating various fiber arts beginning with basic clothing construction moving to traditional quilting, which lead to her fiber artwork. She considers herself a fiber mixed media artist because fiber is the foundational starting point to add other objects to, such as metals and found objects.

Early on Kathy used mainly commercial fabrics in her artwork. She continues to grow in her art endeavor by dying many of her fibers used in her more recent works. Using fibers, fabrics, paper and other backgrounds that can be stabilized, stitched with metal, natural elements and found objects that would not necessarily go together. This produces a soft feel with an edgy, harder, unique juxtaposition in each piece.

Kathy is constantly looking for ways to learn new techniques that may not come from fiber artists, rather other artists using other mediums. She works to adapt those techniques to the fiber. She is inspired by nature and architecture for many of the pieces she creates.
